The Video Platform Offers Viewers Power to Limit Artificial Intelligence-Made Media in Personal Streams

Users will soon have a new feature that allows them to reduce the volume of AI-made videos appearing in their streams. This initiative comes as the service announced that it currently hosts over 1 bn content made with AI.

Trial and Implementation

The update is in a pilot phase over the next few weeks before a widespread launch. This shift comes amid a increase in AI content, driven by emerging AI video creators.

AI Proliferation Online

Studies have shown that almost 10% of the most rapidly expanding video streams on a competing service primarily display AI-generated videos. A considerable share of this content is considered low-quality AI content, a label for inferior, mass-produced content that is often illogical or dreamlike.

“We know from our community that many people enjoy content produced via AI tools, including computer-generated images to informative clips, and we aim to give people the power to adjust the amount of that, based on their own preferences,” stated a platform representative.

AI on the Platform

The platform shared that there are currently 1.3 billion videos on its app identified as AI-generated. Collectively, over 100 m videos are added to the platform daily, making clips made by AI a minor percentage of its complete catalog.

Customizing Your Feed

Users will be capable of decrease or raise the volume of AI-generated videos they watch by accessing the “manage topic” option in the platform and picking “AI-generated content”. Further subjects that are already be modified under the filter include news, style, beauty, and movement.

AI Disclosure Rules

TikTok’s policies mandate users to identify convincing AI-generated content, and it prohibits dangerous deepfakes of celebrities or critical incidents. Any authentic-looking AI-generated clip that is unmarked can be deleted under its user guidelines.

Additionally, the app will from now on add an “AI-made” watermark to content produced via its proprietary AI systems, or identified by an cross-platform project for spotting artificial media. This action is aimed to help prevent users from seeking to evade the tagging system.

AI Literacy Programs

The platform is also establishing a $2m awareness program for professionals and organizations to develop learning resources about using AI responsibly. This program will support charitable organizations dedicated to training programming and robotics.

Moderation Strategy

TikTok has supported its safety measures, during debate over intentions to cut jobs for hundreds of safety staff in the United Kingdom. TikTok is planning to eliminate a significant number of roles in its user protection department in London, with labor groups and internet security professionals expressing worry that people are being substituted by automated systems.

A senior executive explained that human moderation would continue to be important, but artificial intelligence can shield workers by eliminating the most harmful content prior to it has to be seen by people. The platform reported a significant reduction in disturbing and violent content seen by safety staff over the last 12 months due to reliance on its AI tools.

“We think that it’s essential to combine humans and technology to keep the platform safe,” the executive stated. “We’ll have staff as part of that process, but we also think it’s very important to minimize viewing of dangerous material as quickly as possible, which is why a extensive automated help is really helping us operate efficiently.”
